Station HandStation Hand
The station hand contributes to the livestock program by undertaking duties such as handling and monitoring of livestock, machinery operation and maintenance, general station maintenance and repairs, and land management. Although not always necessary, applicants are generally expected to have good horse handling skills. Enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and enjoyment of the outdoor life are essential. The Machine Operator's position requires sound mechanical knowledge, not only for the operation of the machinery but also in maintaining this equipment and other service vehicles. Main duties include maintaining station roads, airstrips, fence lines and fire breaks, with the ability to observe and report on general cattle and property condition. Previous experience in a similar role will be highly regarded and you must have sound mechanical skills. The boreman is responsible for checking and maintaining bores, turkey nest dams, motors, troughs, and surrounding fences to ensure continuous water supply to all stock. Experience is required with a sound understanding of the cattle industry. Previous experience in a similar role will be highly regarded and you must have basic mechanical skills. The station cook prepares and serves four nutritional meals a day (breakfast, smoko, lunch & dinner). A positive can-do attitude is a must for this physically demanding job with early starts and long days, but for an organised person there is plenty of time for breaks. You will have good personal hygiene, maintain an extremely clean and tidy kitchen, store and prepare food to meet strict food safety and handling standards. Previous experience in a similar role or catering background is essential. Catering numbers varying depending on the station, usually between 10-20, with additional visitors and functions on an ad-hoc basis. A friendly, self-motivated nature is important to this position along with an honest work ethic. This is a seasonal position running from early March until November, someone who can commit to this whole period will normally be favoured over someone who can’t.
